Karrum Nasser, the Executive Director of the Vigo County Solid Waste Management District, has announced the launch of an application aimed to help Vigo County residents. This application was inspired by the Vigo County Solid Waste Management District to make recycling easier for all citizens.
Originally Vigo County's Solid Waste Management District was a regional district made up of Parke, Vigo, and Vermillion Counties. In 2003, Vigo County separated to form their district with the help of tipping fees coming from Sycamore Ridge Landfill. The tipping fees help pay for numerous recycling and township cleanup events. The township cleanup events have demonstrated how recycling is often tricky.
After arriving in 2020, Nasser made it his mission to make recycling a more manageable task in Vigo County. He has strived to do this by formulating the Vigo County Recycles application. The Vigo County Recycles app is available for download in Google Play and Apple Store. The application is free. By simply inputting one's address, Vigo County citizens can enter the name of an item they need to get rid of and be answered with numerous options and destinations for disposal and their distance from these places. These options include places to donate their items, such as Goodwill and Lighthouse Mission. Also included in the app is an events page that displays the upcoming recycling events and cleanup events that the Vigo County Solid Waste Management District is putting on.
Nasser is excited about the app and its ability to provide information at the fingertips of nearly every citizen, thus allowing them to dispose of their items responsibly. With the 2022 goal of increasing people's means for getting rid of larger items, the launch of this app paired with 24 scheduled township cleanups appears very promising for Vigo County's future.
